Does Ivermectin Treat Ringworm In Guinea Pigs

What is ivermectin? Ivermectin is most commonly used as a heartworm preventive in dogs and cats. It also used 'off label' or 'extra-label' for treating a variety of internal and external parasites. For example, in dogs, ivermectin may be used in the treatment of mites (demodectic mange, scabies, and ear mites), intestinal parasites (hookworms, roundworms), and capillaria.

  • Presentation. Rat ringworm in pigs can easily be mistaken for soil or faecal contamination of the skin. Rather than producing rings of inflammation it produces patches of up to 20cm in diameter usually on the neck, shoulders or back of a brown to orangey colour (figs 1 & 2). In rare cases it may appear as occasional rings (fig 3).

  • Oct 20, 2019The 1% formulation (don't worry if it is labeled for injection in pigs and cows) is safe, readily available, and affordable; .05 ml/kg is the standard topical dose for guinea pigs. Ivermectin does NOT kill the eggs of lice or mites, so the treatment must be repeated at least once about a week later.
